Alabama questions

Can a church in Alabama get a playground grant?

Often, yes. The Community Foundation of West Alabama funds tax-exempt organizations that hold an IRS tax determination letter, and recreation and children and youth are among its funding purposes. A church applying there needs that letter in hand.

Walmart Spark Good Local Grants name faith-based organizations as eligible, with awards of $250 to $5,000. The project must benefit the broader community and serve the same area as the Walmart store, Sam's Club or distribution center you apply to. A playground the whole neighborhood can use fits that rule. See our church playground equipment.

What playground grants can an Alabama school apply for?

Public schools can apply for the American Academy of Dermatology's Shade Structure Grant, which pays up to $8,000 for a permanent shade structure and its installation, plus a sun safety sign. The school must have a sun safety program running for at least a year and needs a letter from a dermatologist. The grant runs once a year, and the Academy notes $8,000 covers most 10 by 10 foot shade sails.

Schools are also eligible for Walmart Spark Good Local Grants of $250 to $5,000, offered in three cycles each year. A school funded by one store cannot reapply to that same store in the same fiscal year, so a school seeking more can apply to a different nearby store or Sam's Club serving its area. See our playgrounds for schools.

Will an Alabama grant pay for an entire playground?

Usually only part of it. The Community Foundation of West Alabama prefers to fund part of a project, so a request for one piece, such as shade or surfacing, alongside money from other sources suits it well. It reviews applications twice a year, in spring and fall, and past grantees are asked to wait a year before applying again.

The Black Belt Community Foundation's Community Grants range from $500 to $5,000 for one-year projects. Many groups pair a grant like this with their own fundraising and split the playground into phases that each grant can cover.
