Louisiana questions
Are there playground grants for nonprofits in the Acadiana parishes of Louisiana?
Yes. The Community Foundation of Acadiana runs The Fund for Acadiana, which awards up to $15,000 to 501(c)(3) nonprofits with projects in Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes. It funds larger initiatives that respond to critical community needs, so present the playground in terms of the community need it meets.
The same foundation's Affiliate Grants offer up to $5,000 for projects based and active in Evangeline, Iberia, St. Landry, St. Mary or Vermilion parish. Each of those parishes has its own focus areas, and your project has to match them. Neither program pays for capital projects that are already finished, so apply before you build.
Can a nonprofit in Shreveport or Bossier City get grant money for a playground?
Possibly. The Community Foundation of North Louisiana's Primary Grants allow capital funding for nonprofits serving Caddo and Bossier parishes. The project has to fit one of the foundation's program areas, such as Environment, Health & Science, or Human Services, so tie the playground to one of them.
Primary Grants run once a year in two stages. First you submit a short letter of intent during a window of about three weeks. Only applicants who are invited move on to the full application.
Can an HOA or neighborhood group in Louisiana get a playground grant?
It is harder, because most Louisiana programs limit applicants to 501(c)(3) nonprofits. The Mandeville Recreation Fund Grant from the Northshore Community Foundation is one exception worth a look. It does not state which types of applicants it accepts, but the project itself must be within zip code 70448, 70471 or 70470 in the Mandeville area.
In New Orleans, the Greater New Orleans Foundation's Gert Town Community Fund supports quality of life in the Gert Town neighborhood, including children and youth and beautification such as greenspace work. Its application is written around programs, so describe the children and residents the play space will serve. See our playgrounds for HOAs.
Can a small Louisiana town or parish recreation department get federal help paying for a playground?
Rural towns of 20,000 people or fewer can apply to the USDA Community Facilities program. It pays to build or improve essential community facilities, such as community centers and child care centers, so a playground tied to one of these could fit. The grant covers up to 75% of costs in low-income towns of 5,000 or fewer, 55% in towns of up to 12,000, and 35% or 15% in towns of up to 20,000. You must show you cannot pay for the project yourself or with commercial credit, and low-interest loans can cover the rest. Applications are accepted year round.
Cities and parishes also receive HUD Community Development Block Grant money every year and choose which local projects to fund. Public facilities and improvements are an eligible use, but projects must mainly benefit low- and moderate-income residents. Nonprofits cannot apply to HUD directly and have to go through their city or parish, which sets its own application dates. See our playgrounds for parks.
